Angry Birds Birthday Party

Angry Birds is where it's at now-a-days! Check out this cool Angry Birds party that The Cake Queen threw for her boys birthday. So fun, and besides the fantastic cake, pretty simple.  I really like the idea of keeping things simple this year.

Lollipop Cookies

I'm so glad The Cake Queen has been busy doing fun stuff because I sure haven't. Here is a great tutorial on how to make some fun lollipop cookies.

I wanted to make something fun for the school carnival at my kids' school. I saw some lollipop cookies from TomKat Studios and I thought that kids would love them. This was my first attempt at making royal icing cookies and I think that these cookies are a great starter cookie for experimenting with royal icing. I first read through this tutorial on working with royal icing from The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle.

Start by gathering your materials. You will need a round cookie cutter, cookie sticks (6-8 inches would work best), decorating bags, decorating tips (use a 2,3 or 4), food coloring gel, a batch of cookie dough and a batch of royal icing.

Royal Icing
3 tablespoons meringue powder (You can find this at Michael's or Walmart with the cake decorating supplies)
1 lb. sifted confectioners' sugar
6 tablespoons warm water.
1/2 teaspoon extract.

Beat all ingredients until icing forms peaks (7-10 minutes at low speed with a heavy-duty mixer, 10-12 minutes at high speed with a hand-held mixer). Makes 3 Cups.

Roll out cookie dough into circles. Place lollipop or cookie stick half way up the back of the cookie.

Bake the cookies and let them cool.

Make the royal icing.

Keep some icing stiff for creating a border around the edge of the cookie.

Add just a little bit of water to create royal icing used for "flooding" the cookie. The consistency of the icing should not be too watery, but it should be able to spread. It should not hold its shape like the border icing.

Add the stiff icing to a decorating bag and draw a border around the edge of the cookie. This will keep the flooding icing from dripping off the sides of the cookie. Let the border set for a few minutes.

You next flood the cookie with the thinner icing. You can do this by filling another pastry bag with the flooding icing and filling in the middle of the cookie. You may also spoon just a small amount of the flooding icing onto the cookie and spread to the edges.

Immediately fill another decorating bag with a different color of the flooding icing. Beginning at the middle, swirl the cookie with this second color. It will flow right into the first layer of icing. Let the cookie dry. I let this batch dry overnight.

I made a swirly shape on most of the lollipop cookies, but I also experimented with polka dots and spiderwebs.

Package each individual cookie in a clear party bag and tie with a ribbon. The kids loved them!

Wizard of Oz Party

Oh, what fun it would be to have girls! Parties would be a blast to plan. A Wizard of Oz themed party is definitely on my list of 'things I would do if I planned girl parties'.  Since I don't have to do that I thankfully have fun friends that plan their daughters parties and then let me post the pictures. My friend, Janet, is also a photographer.....yeah, don't you hate multi-talented people. I know. Seriously. Check out all of her fun photos on her blog Vintage Frame Photography. She also recently started giving photography tips on there which is totally fun for wannabes like me!

It's not a real Wizard of Oz party unless The Scarecrow and Glinda come to visit!

Party table...hello Toto....don't get blown away in the tornado!

Totally awesome cupcakes!! What kid wouldn't want to eat a dead witch! So fun!

Hello, pretty Glinda!

Yes! Ruby slipper cookies, my favorite!

Notice anything? This photo makes me laugh. I bet the kids got a kick out of that.

Pin the tail on the lion.

The little birthday girl even got to dress up as Dorothy! She's prettier than the real Dorothy though.

Real Candles Are Fire Hazards

Seriously, there needs to be a good excuse to make these awesome candles instead of using real ones so I'm using the fire hazard card. I love these! The bright colors are so much fun. Who cares if they taste good....they look great! Perfect for any birthday party or just for the fun of it!  Thanks to the Cake Queen for sending us these!

Night Owl Party

If you thought the owl cupcakes were adorable that I posted yesterday, you are going to absolutely love this "Night Owl" themed slumber party. It's hard to find cute themes for the tween girls and I thought this was so creative and fun. What a talented mom to put such a great party together. This first picture is of the table that was made into a bed.....I love it!

What a cute birthday girl!

Her mom made all the adorable owl decorations.

What, owl pillows?! I'm so in love with this party!

Of course! You have to have s'mores!

And don't forget the healthy food. We don't want to set a bad example now, do we :)

Can this party get any better....

Sorry for the small picture....but do you recognize these totally awesome cupcakes! Yes, I'm related to the girl that made those. Well, legally at least....

Looks like the birthday girl is having a blast! Mission accomplished! I loved it! Thanks for sharing this fun birthday!
